The Key to Home Organization:

The secret to creating a truly organized, maintainable space is simple: every item needs a designated “home.” That means choosing one exact spot where a belonging is always found—and always put back.

Why It Matters:

When items have a home, the benefits are huge:

1️⃣ Everyone in the family is on the same page—no more “Honey, where’s my…?”

2️⃣ Over time, finding and returning items takes less thought because motor memory kicks in.

But here’s the dilemma: How do you decide the perfect spot for something? The answer is not always as straightforward as you might think.

Two Guiding Questions:

When assigning a home for an item, ask yourself:

1️⃣ Where do I use this?

2️⃣ Where would I look for this?

These simple questions guide you toward the most functional, natural storage solutions.

Example 1: Face Wipes

At first glance, you might assume face wipes belong in the bathroom. But for me, they live in my nightstand. Why? Because I use them when I’m too tired to wash my face before bed. Their “home” is where they’re actually needed.

Example 2: Hair Supplies in the Kitchen

My cousin organizes her daughters’ hair bows and brushes in the kitchen—not the bathroom or bedroom. On busy mornings, it’s easier to style their hair downstairs before school. A kitchen drawer became the perfect, practical home.

Example 3: Flashlight

Think about a flashlight. It might be stored in the garage, but if the power went out, where’s the first place you’d look? For many people, it’s the junk drawer. That makes the junk drawer the most functional home for it to belong.

Putting It All Together:

The next time you’re organizing, ask yourself:

1️⃣ Where do I use this?

2️⃣ Where would I look for this?

These two simple questions help you create logical, lasting systems that make finding—and putting away—items effortless. That’s the real key to maintaining an organized home for the long term.
