Hoarding vs. Squalor: Understanding the Difference

At Simply Pearly, we often meet individuals and families who feel overwhelmed by their living situations — and unsure how they got there. The words hoarding and squalor are sometimes used interchangeably, but they actually describe two very different circumstances.

What is squalor?

Squalor refers to severe uncleanliness or unsanitary living conditions that pose health and safety risks. This might include rotting food, mold, pest infestations, or human and animal waste.

Unlike hoarding, squalor is not a distinct mental health disorder, but may result from underlying mental health issues.

Those living in squalor often struggle with neglect of self-care, though this is not always the case. In fact, some individuals may appear well put-together outside the home, making it impossible to recognize their living situation just by looking at them. This is why compassion and understanding are so essential — what we see rarely tells the whole story.

The concern in squalor is primarily environmental rather than psychological, and cleaning is often an urgent priority for health and safety.

What is Hoarding?

Hoarding is a mental health condition that makes it extremely difficult for someone to let go of possessions, regardless of their value. Items may pile up until rooms can no longer be used for their intended purpose. What might look like “clutter” to others often represents comfort, safety, or memories to the person living with it.

Hoarding vs. Squalor at a Glance:

While both situations can make a home unsafe or overwhelming, the root causes and solutions are quite different. Hoarding centers around the excessive accumulation of possessions and difficulty discarding items. The main challenge lies in blocked rooms, limited mobility, and emotional distress.

Squalor, on the other hand, involves unsanitary or hazardous living conditions such as filth, pests, strong odors, or waste buildup. The health risks in squalor tend to be more immediate — including exposure to mold, bacteria, or respiratory hazards — requiring urgent sanitation and cleanup.

 Awareness and Insight:

A key difference between hoarding and squalor is the level of awareness a person has about their situation. Individuals with hoarding disorder are often aware of their clutter but feel intense anxiety or distress about letting items go. They may recognize the problem but struggle to change on their own.

Those living in squalor, however, may have limited awareness or insight into their environment. They may not fully recognize the severity of the conditions or the health risks involved, which can make intervention more challenging.
