Part 2: Subtle Red Flags of an “Extreme Clutter” Situation

It’s important to note that only a qualified mental health professional can diagnose hoarding disorder, and the term itself should be used with care. Hoarding exists on a spectrum with five varying levels, ranging from mild to extreme. Just because one or more of these red flags apply to someone does not necessarily mean they are a hoarder.

To help reduce stigma, scrutiny, and labeling, Simply Pearly Organizing Services uses the term “extreme clutter” whenever possible. The goal is to recognize early warning signs and encourage understanding, not judgment.

Red Flag 1: The Stacking Habit

Stacking items on flat surfaces often begins innocently enough—a few piles here and there. But over time, if things aren’t regularly put away, these stacks can grow to unsafe heights. What starts as a small clutter issue can quickly create serious risks, such as falling objects or blocked pathways that become tripping hazards. Eventually, these piles can make certain areas of the home difficult—or even impossible—to use safely

Red Flag 2: Sudden Increased Isolation

A noticeable withdrawal from social interactions can be a subtle but significant indicator of extreme clutter. Individuals may begin avoiding friends, family, or neighbors out of embarrassment or fear of judgment about the state of their home. Invitations may be declined, phone calls or messages go unanswered, and previously enjoyed activities may be skipped.

Over time, the combination of clutter and social withdrawal can contribute to feelings of loneliness, anxiety, or depression, further making it difficult to address the underlying issues. Like other red flags, sudden isolation alone doesn’t indicate hoarding disorder, but it can be a sign that someone may benefit from support in reclaiming their space and peace of mind.

Red Flag 3: Misplaced Documents

When clutter begins to take over, important papers often get lost in the mix. Misplaced bills can lead to unpaid balances, late fees, or even service disconnections. In more serious cases, missing mortgage or rent payments can put housing stability at risk. While this issue is less common in the age of online billing, it still significantly affects those who are less comfortable with technology—particularly older generations who rely more on physical mail. Additionally, excess piles of paper not only create stress but can also pose a serious fire hazard over time.

Red Flag 4: Excessive Bargain Hunting

While finding a good deal can be satisfying, excessive bargain hunting—especially when it leads to purchasing items that aren’t needed or don’t have a designated space—can contribute to extreme clutter. Individuals may feel compelled to buy items simply because they are on sale, thinking they “might need it someday.” Over time, these accumulated items can overwhelm living spaces, creating obstacles and stress.

The result is often a home filled with items that are rarely used, making it difficult to keep the space organized or functional.

Red Flag 5: Neglecting Home Maintenance

Neglecting home maintenance often stems from anxiety or shame about one’s living situation. Many individuals hesitate to let others into their homes, fearing judgment or embarrassment. In some cases, the clutter itself makes it physically difficult for workers to access areas that need repair. Over time, small issues—like leaks or electrical problems—can worsen, leading to significant property damage and declining living conditions. Often, when the exterior of a home appears neglected, it can also be a sign that the interior is struggling too.

Conclusion:

Recognizing these subtle red flags can help individuals, families, and professionals identify when clutter is beginning to impact daily life. While the presence of one or more of these behaviors does not automatically indicate hoarding disorder, paying attention early can prevent situations from becoming overwhelming or unsafe.

At Simply Pearly Organizing Services, we focus on understanding and supporting those experiencing extreme clutter with empathy and discretion. Whether it’s reclaiming functional space, improving safety, or restoring peace of mind, taking small, compassionate steps can make a big difference.

If you or a loved one is noticing these signs, reaching out for guidance and support is a positive step toward creating a safer, more organized home environment.
